We’ve been very busy in the clinic over the last couple of months upgrading some of our diagnostic equipment. Call us nerds, but we are super excited to share these new tech toys with you and your pets. At Midwest Vets we think it’s really important to keep up with the times and regularly update our equipment so that we can continue to provide the best care for your four-legged friends.

In-House Laboratory

Our in-house laboratory allows us to perform a lot of our own testing and receive results within 20 minutes. Rather than sending samples away to Perth or interstate, fast in-house results mean we can move straight on to getting a diagnosis and treatment plan for your pets. Here’s a look at some of the new gadgets:

SediVue Urinalysis Machine

This amazing machine allows us to analyze the contents of the urine and also take pictures on a microscopic scale. This is great for identifying crystals and inflammatory cells, which provides important information for diagnosing many common urinary issues. If your pet is straining to urinate, urinating more than usual or has discolored urine, these are things we can investigate this with our SediVue!

Coagulation Machine

Our new coagulation machines measures the time it takes for blood to clot. Blood clotting is actually a very complicated process in the body… which will most likely bore you to death if we go into details!

Causes of abnormal clotting times include snake bites, eating rat baits and genetic disorders. We need to be able to diagnose these ASAP and our new equipment will help us do just that.

Endoscope

This is one for both our smallies and our largies patients. An endoscope is a nifty device that lets us see far down your animals throat. In dogs this is great for diagnosing and removing foreign bodies like all the way down to the stomach or in the airway. In horses it allows us to look up the nose and assess the airways to diagnose things like sinus issues, laryngeal paralysis (roarers) and exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage (bleeders).

ECG

Electrocardiogram (ECG) traces the electrical activity in the heart. Our new ECG is portable and integrates straight with our computers so we can check your pets heart right there in the consult room and send the results off instantly for specialist analysis.
